I (HEART) #dontloozeit

I've been talking about how much I love Twitter for the past two years now, but what happened to me on June 17th of this year, made me love Twitter and its users even more. When people tell me they don't like Twitter, or they don't understand it, I tell them this story and they at least understand why I love Twitter:

I was invited to talk about my Twitterdate at the #140 conference in NYC, which I was really excited about. The day before my presentation we had drinks at Club Touch and like the 50 other geeks attending, I checked my bag in and enjoyed myself. When I got back to my hotel I noticed my laptop wasn't in my bag anymore and I was freaking out.

I posted this tweet:

I mean, my laptop was my livelihood, my baby, this was not good. I was really upset. As a freelance filmmaker in this financial climate I wasn't in the position to buy a new laptop and I wasn't insured. My faithful Tweeps knew this and started a fundraiser without my knowledge. Michiel Berger, started the collection, and within an hour he raised € 600,-. 6.5 hours after my first tweet, my tweeps raised € 1780,- to buy me the newest MacBook Pro. Even now when I think about it I tear up. This was pure Twitter love, it made me cry harder than the fact I lost my laptop.

I made this video to thank my Tweeps:

THANK YOU #dontloozeit (video) from Marlooz on Vimeo.

When I got my new MacBook, Renato laser-etched the names of all the Tweeps that donated money on my new Mac. It was my gift to them. I will be forever grateful and I will always love Twitter for not only changing my life, but introducing me to so many great people. I wish there was more I can do to thank them all.

The tweets where all filed under #dontloozeit but unfortunately haven't been saved by twitter. Would've liked to put them in an archive. Founder of Mobypicture @mathys, who donated twice, did make a group of the pictures of that day.

As I've always said, Twitter itself isn't much. It is the *people* on Twitter who are magnetic, charming and seductive. It is they who create the lure.
After hearing your story, I will now add that the Twitter people are also generous and selfless. I'm honored to be part of the Twitter community :-)

Nice story. I once screwed up my blog during an update (wordpress), just one tweet got me connected to http://twitter.com/mdbraber. He phoned and helped me with the mess. Blog was up in a spiffy, power of twitter.
